Lab Purpose and Procedure

The purpose of this lab is to give you practice programming small programs related to the constructs and conceptual ideas covered in lecture. To get the most out of your lab experience, you should always feel free to ask your lab instructors any questions you may have.

The lab homepage is your central repository for course resources, as well as the listing of laboratory assignments.

You are encouraged to read through the lab assignment (located at the link at the top of the lab homepage) BEFORE coming to lab, so that you have a general idea of what will be covered.

If copying is detected, all parties will be reported to the course instructor and the appropriate action taken. The minimum penalty for cheating on a lab assignment will be a zero for the lab in question.

Opportunities for Academic Assistance

1. Speak to your TA or professor about the difficulty you are having. Many times a brief discussion will clarify things enough to get you back on track.

2. OFFICE HOURS: Office hours will probably be added this semester and will be listed in the table above. Be aware that these office hours are not intended to be a replacement time slot for the day's lab work where you can go early and ask questions the entire hour trying to get the lab done. It is intended to be where you can go for general questions or conceptual questions about the lecture material, lecture assignments, or lab assignments. You will have an opportunity to start the lab assignment early, and to work on the lab assignment and ask questions during your lab period.
   
   Make sure to email the ta listed next to the posted office hour to let him/her know that you plan on coming for help so he/she can make sure to be there. If nobody emails, then they will assume nobody is coming and may or may not be there.

3. TUTORING: If the office hours available to you do not fit your schedule, there is also a tutor through the Academic Success Center. The tutor for this semester is Cecilia Prentice. She will be available at the following times in room 301 of the Academic Success Center:

   • Tuesday 12:00 - 2:00
   • Wednesday 3:00 - 5:00
   • Thursday 11:00-1:00

Policies and Procedures

Lab Etiquette

• DO NOT BE LATE TO THE LAB! Your ta will probably give a short introduction to each lab. If you are late, you will be responsible for anything you miss; individual lectures will not be given.
• If the lab TA is late for a lab, please remain in the classroom for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, you may assume that lab has been postponed for some reason. Check your email to see if your TA has already sent an explanation; if he/she has not, then email your ta and course instructor to see what is going on.
• You may leave a lab early only if you have completed the assigned tasks AND it has been approved by your TA. Let them do their introduction first before asking them to check your work.
• All relevant material should be brought to the lab (course notes and handouts), if needed.
• Cell phones must be off during the lab, and use of cell phones, IMs, and headphones is not allowed.
• If you are using your laptop the sound should be muted.

Submission Policy

• This semester, the lab assignments are due by midnight Wednesday. If an extension is given for some reason (school cancelation, more challenging lab, etc.), it will be announced by your TA.
• Late submissions will not be graded.
• You should be completing your work on the SoC computers. If you are not, you'll need to transfer your work to your account on the SoC computers to make sure your programs compile and run on those machines.
• Use the Vocareum web page to submit your work to for grading. If you haven't already received an email from Vocareum, you will once the instructor gets Vocareum set up and adds the rolls to the site. Once you receive that email from Vocareum, then you can log in and change your password to something that you can remember.
• Programs will be graded on how well they solve the assigned problem (adherence to program specification).
• Programs MUST COMPILE for the lab ta to be able to grade them. Programs that do not compile will result in a deduction of 25 points, with further deductions possible.
• Programs will also be evaluated on proper formatting and use of comments. Points my be lost for cases where the formatting is beyond acceptable.
• If your code does not follow standard indentation conventions, there may be a deduction of up to 5 points from your grade.
• A header comment is required on all files that you create. A missing header comment will result in a deduction of 5 points from your grade. Header comments should include your name, course and semester, lab number, and a brief description about your program.
• Remember that commenting un-obvious parts of your program is a common practice for programmers and is also required. It is helpful not only to the graders, but also to yourselves if you work on your program at different times. Even if the program is short and seems to be obvious, try to place at least one comment before a block of code to explain what that code does, if for no other reason than for you to get into the habit of commenting your code.

Grading and Returning Graded Work

• There will be no re-grading of labs (i.e., you will not be allowed to resubmit a lab to be re-graded).
• The grade that you receive on your lab work will show up in Vocareum. Vocareum also allows for in-code comments to be added by the grader. You can check back on Vocareum to see if the grader added any feedback to your code.
• There is a grade book on Blackboard as well, where your attendance will be recorded, and the grades from Vocareum will be uploaded to.
• Grades will be recorded in the gradebook on 101 Lab Blackboard page usually by the end of the following week. You may periodically check your lab grades there.
• If you have a question about a grade that you receive, you must contact your lab ta within a week of the posting of your grade, so make sure you check your grades each week.
• There will be a deduction of 25 points for not following instructions. Your lab ta will explain this in more detail.
• Important announcements will be sent to students by e-mail to the student mailbox: username@clemson.edu. If you do not check your Clemson email regularly, make sure your email is forwarded to the correct address. It is your responsibility to check your email. Excuses such as "I did not know because I did not check my email" are not accepted.
