Computer Applications for Business and Industry (CABI)

In the Computer Science Department at Clemson, I focus on extending the undergraduate and graduate education beyond the classroom to get real experience with real world problems while still in the University environment. To formalize this effort, in December of 1999, I established the Computer Applications for Business and Industry Lab (CABI Lab) to bring together businesses and industry with computer needs and match that need with student skills and interest.
Our experience is with Access and Oracle databases using ASP and JSP but we are not limited to this. Faculty is encouraged to be involved with our projects. Dr. Art Pellerin is one whom has taken a special interest in our database work. I invite you to explore with us any interest in working with the CABI Lab to strengthen the education experience of our students with supplying business and industry applications to prepare them for their careers in the real world.

CABI has completed 3 projects for GE Gas Turbine in Greenville. These projects built web interface for databases delivery within the company's web system. During this time two students had summer internships and were offered jobs. One student was given a GE company award for Outstanding Internship and was the first intern from GE Power System in Greenville to receive this award.

CABI has completed an educational web site for protecting coastal water called Coast-A-Syst. This project is a Coastal Homestead Assessment System, which provides residents with information to help protect the quality of surface and ground water near homes and throughout the community.

The CABI Lab will facilitate the student's experiences in such a way that student, Laboratory Partner and faculty benefits are maximized. Corporations or agencies desiring a source of prospective employees or solutions to their problem will be identified as Laboratory Partners. Junior, senior and graduate students to benefit form the mentoring program of the Laboratory can apply.

Possible area of Projects but not limited to :

  • Web interface to a particular Database(s)
  • Database development to meet the particular need(s)
  • Development of Intranet applications
  • Development of E-Business applications
  • Research projects that are amenable to faculty and graduate student involvement occasionally result from student activities and Laboratory Partner needs.

Benefits to be gained include :

  • To the Student: education beyond the classroom that prepares him or her for real-world ways to working in real-world corporation under real-world conditions.
  • To the Student and Laboratory Partner: An internship that allows both parties to evaluate the other for employment.
  • To the Laboratory Partner: A unique, committed resource for tackling a particular problem or task.
  • To the Faculty: Opportunities to identify new research problems that might lead to funding or publications.
