Grading:

Policies and Procedures

• Attendance Policy
  
  • 0% - 10% = 0 - 4 total absences (lab plus lecture, excused or unexcused): No penalty
  • 11% - 20% = 5 - 9 total absences (lab plus lecture, excused or unexcused): Final grade reduced by one letter grade
  • 21% - 30% = 10 - 14 total absences (lab plus lecture, excused or unexcused): Final grade reduced by two letter grades
  • 31%+ = 15+ total absences (lab plus lecture, excused or unexcused): Final grade reduced by three letter grades

• Programs, Assignments and Lexes.
  Programs, assignments and lexes will be assigned on the web pages. Students will be notified in class and/or by email. Please check your email frequently. The due date for each program, assignment or lex will be specified in the assignment. Programs and assignments are to be submitted electronically and are due by the end (i.e., 11:59 pm) of the specified due date, unless otherwise specified. Lexes are typically due at the end of the class period unless otherwise specified. How a lex is to be submitted will be specified in the lex instructions.

• Late Submissions.
  Late programs, assignments and lexes will not be accepted.

• Tests.
  There will be three full period tests given this semester. A student absent from a test will receive a grade of 0 for that test, regardless of whether the student's absence is excused or not. There will be no make-up test provided. However, the final exam grade, if higher, will replace the lowest test grade. (Click here for the schedule.)

• Class attendance.
  A student absent from class is responsible for all assigned work, tests, or material covered during the class. Attendance will be taken daily.

• Final exam exemptions.
  There will be no exemptions from the final exam.

• Final program average.
  The programs assigned in class are an integral part of this course. A student who fails the programs assignments (program average below 60%) fails the course unless the student can explain and justify to the satisfaction of the instructor his or her poor performance for the programs.

• Final lab grade.
  The lab exercises are an integral part of this course. A student who fails lab (lab grade below 60%) fails the course unless the student can explain and justify to the satisfaction of the instructor his or her poor performance in lab.

• Electronic Device Etiquette
  We welcome the use of electronic devices and the benefits they can bring to the learning experience, but their use has to be tempered by common senese and common courtesy. Please abide by the following rules:
  
  1. Cell phones, pagers, laptops, PDAs, and all other electronic devices should be muted (volume turned off) before class starts.
  2. Unless otherwise instructed, students should bring their laptops every class day.
  3. Laptops should be turned off or shut when the instructor tells students to do so.
  4. Unless otherwise instructed, students may not engage in sending or receiving of email, chat room activity, or Internet surfing during class time.
  5. Students should charge their laptop batteries fully before coming to class. Many quizzes will be taken online; a dead battery results in a grade of "0" for that quiz.
  6. If you laptop breaks, you should inform the instructor immediately by phone, email, or in person at least one hour before class starts so that paper copies of tests or quizzes may be prepared. Failure to do so results in a grade of "0" for that quiz.

• Cheating.
  Unless otherwise stated explicitly in an assignment or lab, each student must do his or her work independently. The University and Departmental policies on academic dishonesty apply. Publicly-available sources for code or other material may be freely used if appropriately attributed. Similarly, code that is obtained from others must be appropriately attributed (but using substantial amounts of code obtained from someone else will not necessarily receive full credit). Each student is responsible for protecting his or her files from access by others. Work that is essentially the same and submitted without proper attribution is considered to be a violation of academic dishonesty policies by all those submitting the work, regardless of who actually did the work.

• Sending email to your instructor or teaching asssistant
  When you send email to your professor/instructor/TA asking for his/her help, you should start your email with:

            Dear Prof. ________         or        Prof. ________
         or
            Dear Dr. ________           or        Dr. ________
         or
            Dear Mr./Ms.  ________      or        Mr./Ms. ________
  
         never:              "Hey", "Yo", or "Tsup".
  

• Cancelled class.
  If the university cancels classes on the day of a scheduled test, the test will be rescheduled.

• Instructor late.
  If the instructor is late for class, students are expected to wait for 30 minutes after the class period starts before leaving .
