Welcome to the Foundations '04 Web Site

Background

Foundations '04 is a follow-on workshop to the highly successful Foundations '02 workshop held at the Applied Physics Laboratory of Johns Hopkins University on 22-24 October 2002. The proceedings for Foundation '02 is available from the Defense Modeling and Simulation Organization's website http/www.dmso.mil with from this page. Hardcopies of the proceedings are available from the Society for Computer Simulation, San Diego, CA ().

The Need for the Foundations 04 Workshop

The Foundations '04 Workshop will build on Foundations '02. The necessity for Foundations '04 was readily apparent at the close of Foundations '02, where there were two primary classes of results noted in the final plenary session. Both of those areas span the entire spectrum of M&S communities: users, managers, developers, and researchers.

  1. There are many VV&A activities that we know how to do but that have not been consolidated into universally adopted best practices. In this case, Foundations '04 will continue to formulate and document best practices.

  2. There are many issues for which basic research is needed. For example, there was some consensus at Foundations '02 that formal methods for VV&A should be developed and adaptive programming issues be explored. Foundations '04 will provide a forum for researchers to present the latest thinking on VV&A.

Foundations '04 will continue two major themes of Foundations '02: We will continue developing a critical and substantive bibliography on VV&A literature and resources and we will facilitate and continue the sustained exchange of VV&A information between various M&S communities that otherwise do not often interact.

One major difference is that since Foundations '2 established the benefits of these workshops, Foundations '4 will focus on moving the state of the practice forward. As such, it will be structured around the topics in the DMSO VV&A roadmap.

The Foundations '04 Workshop

The Workshop will have five elements.

  1. Plenary Keynote Session (3 speakers on Day 1) addressing: 1) Fundamental VV&A Knowledge; 2) Practical VV&A Processes; and 3) Supporting VV&A Tools. The Keynote speakers will be selected for their recognized achievements in the field.

  2. Working Sessions: There will be working sessions lasting approximately three hours each. The number of quality State of the Art papers received will determine the number of days needed for the workshop.

  3. Social Event: A mixer is planned for the evening of Day 1, after the Keynotes and first working session to encourage interaction among people from different M&S communities.

  4. Plenary Synopsis Session: After the working sessions, this session will report the highlights from the working sessions and will result in an initial synopsis of research implications from each. This session concludes the Workshop for most participants.

  5. Workshop Report Production: Workshop leaders will draft Workshop products
