ACM Programming Contest - 11/08/2010
Congrats to the three Clemson teams participating in the Southeast Regional ACM programming contest this past weekend! At the contest site we attended in Savannah, GA, our top team placed 1st among 28 total teams, including strong competitors such as Georgia Tech, 2 of whose 5 teams placed 2nd and 3rd. In the entire region, our top team ranked 8th of 75 teams, placing behind several teams from schools in Florida. This is now the third year in a row where Clemson has placed 1st at our contest site. Our long-term goal is to one day win across the entire region, overcoming our perennial rivals from schools like UCF.
The teams from Clemson are:
Clemson 1: Chris Corsi, Ben Cousins, Brandon Pelfrey
Clemson A: Bryce Richards, Rob Seay, Aditya Sriram
Clemson Alpha: Blake Badders, Adam Hassler, Andrew Ouzts
These folks trained incredibly hard for the event, working through 5 practice contests in the last month, as well as a set of challenging training problems I’ve assembled as part of my evening problem-solving seminar. If you run into any of these students, please congratulate them on a job well done. Thanks also to Chad Waters, who assisted me with the coaching this year.
Best,
-- Brian

ACM contest - 11/09/2009
The Southeast Regional ACM contest this year was held last Saturday (November 7), with 82 teams from colleges across the southeast competing at three different contest sites. I accompanied 3 Clemson teams to the contest site at Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, GA. The team members were:
- Clemson 1:
- Ben Cousins (Undergrad)
- Brandon Pelfrey (Undergrad)
- Chad Waters (Grad)
- Clemson A:
- Adam Hassler (Undergrad)
- Praveen Peri (Grad)
- Robert Seay (Undergrad)
- Clemson Alpha:
- Blake Badders (Undergrad)
- Josiah Hester (Undergrad)
- Raghuveer Mohan (Grad)
Of the 30+ teams at our specific site, the Clemson 1 and Clemson A teams placed first and second. In the entire region (80+ teams), however, these two teams ended up in 10th and 11th, due to a remarkably strong showing from the Florida schools (in particular UCF, whose five teams all placed in the top 10). Ranks 1 through 8 were all teams from Florida schools, with one of the five Georgia Tech teams in 9th.
The contest was 5 hours and consisted of 9 problems. Score are determined first by the number of problems solved, with ties broken according to speed.
Please join me in congratulating our team members for a respectable showing this year, and please encourage these folks to continue their hard work and training for next year's contest!
